Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn , removed from rootlet, soil, and gelatinous matter on root stock and dried.

Description  : Cylindrical or semi cylindrical and longitudinally furrowed, somewhat curved, 10 - 30 cm long. 1 - 3 cm in diameter. Externally yellowish brown or deep brown, longitudinally wrinkled, showing numerous fine veins like vegetable sponge at the place where the outer bark fallen off. Root stock occasionally with black viscous gelatinous substance commonly known as "oil head". Relatively light, texture hard and fragile, easily broken, fracture yellowish white or yellow with sparsely scattered deep yellow oil dots and some clefts, wood broad with radial striations. Sometimes the central part rotten wood like odour, slightly aromatic, taste bitter, sticky on chewing.

Identification  : ransverse section: Cork consisting of several layers of brown cells. Phloem ray relatively broad, sieve tube groups and fibre bundles, alternately arranged with xylem vessels groups and fibre bundles, regularly radiated. Cambium ring undulated, fibre bundle yellow, lignified accompanied by stone cells. Pith present or withered. Oil cavities scattered in rays and throughout parenchyma in pith. Inulin visible in parenchymatous cells.Total ash: Not more than 4.0%

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter and "oil head", wash clean, soften thoroughly cut into thick slices and dry.Roast: Spread several layers of rough paper made of straw in a wire shallow basket, put a layer of undried clean slices of Radix Vladimiriae on every layer of the paper, cover the slices with the paper, roast on a cook stove or in drying shed until the volatile oil is absorbed by the paper and take out and dry in the air

Action  : To promote the flow of qi and relieve pain.

Indication  : pain and distension in the epigastrium and abdomen with borborygmi, diarrhea, tenesms; discomfort int the hypochondriac regions, pain in the liver, diseases of the gall bladder

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
