Collection  : The drug is collected when foliage growing luxuriantly in summer and autumn, removed from stem and branch.

Description  : leaves digitately compound, leaflets 5 or 3, lanceolate or elliptical lanceolate, the middle leaflets 5 - 10cm long, 2 - 4cm wide, the lateral leaflets relatively small, apex acuminate, base cuneate, margin dentate, upper surface green, lower surface pale green, both surface pubescent along veins, relatively dense on the lower surface of young leaf, petioles 2 - 6cm long, with shallow groove, densely covered with greyish white hairs, odor aromatic, taste pungent and slightly bitter.

Identification  : Transverse section: upper epidermal cells arranged regularly, pubescent on both surfaces and more prominent on the lower surface. Palisade tissue of 3 - 4 rows of cells, spongy tissue loose. Vasculat bundles of the midrib collateral, U shaped with 1 - 5 small vascular bundles in the hallow of U shaped part, pits visible on the surrounding parenchymatous cells, several rows of collenchymatous cells occurring inside the upper epidermis and lower epidermis.Leaf in surface view: Upper epidermal cells subpolygonal or irregular with sinuous anticlinal walls. Non-glandular hairs, 1 - 4 celled, apical cells elongated with warty prominences. Glandular scales with a 4 celled head upt to 55µm in diameter and unicellular stalk, small glandular hairs few with a 1 - 4 celled head up to 25µm in diameter and a 1 - 3 celled stalk, very short. Lower epidermal cells relatively small, 17 - 30 (-45) µm long, 12 - 25µm in diameter with slightly sinuous or straight anticlinal walls, stomata subrounded, anomaytic, 15 - 20µm in diameter with 3 - 6 subsidiary cells. Non-glandular hairs, glandular scales and small glandular hairs numerous.

Processing  :

Action  : To counteract toxicity, and to induce expectoration, relieve cough and asthma.

Indication  : chronic bronchitis with cough and asthma

Precautions  :

Dosage  : Used while fresh for the extraction of Oleum Viticis Negundo.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool place.

Description  : A pale yellow to orange yellow, clear liquid, odour charateristic and aromatic, taste slightly pungent. Freely miscible with hydrated ethaol, chloroform or ether, practically insoluble in water.Relative density: 0.890 - 0.910 at 25ºC (Appendix Vll A)Refractive index: 1.485 - 1.500 (Appendix Vll F)

Identification  : 1.Dissolve about 0.1g of sodium nitrite in 1 - 2 drops of water. Add 0.3ml of the oil and 0.5ml of dilute sulfuric acid, mix well, the oil layer shows a jade green colour.2.To 1 drop of the oil add 1ml of chloroform, mix well, add 5% solution of bromine in chloroform in dropwise, then the bromine colour of the solution disappears, continue to add 5% solution of bromine in chloroform in dropwise until the solution becomes pale yellow, a green colour is produced gradually on standing.Fatty oil: To 1ml of the oil add 10ml of ethanol, oil globules should not be produced on standing.

Action  : To promote expectoration, and to relieve cough and asthma.

Indication  : chronic bronchitis

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 20 to 40 mg, 3 times a day.

Storage  : Preserve in tightly closed containers, stored in a cool place, and protected from light.
