Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn and winter, removed from leaf, cut into section and dried in the sun.

Description  : Cylindrical or subsquare, 2 - 3 cm long, 2 - 5 mm in diameter. Externally reddish brown to purplish red with fine longitudinal striations, glabrous or yellowish green to greyish brown. Sometimes with white dotted lenticels covered with yellowish brown pubescence. Most nodes of stem branch with two opposite downward curved hooks (sterile peduncles). Some only with a hook at one side and with raised scars at the other side, hooks relatively flattened or rounded, apex acute, base relatively broad, dotted scars of falling petiole and ring shaped stipule scars visible on the branch at the hook base. Texture hard and tenacious, fracture yellowish brown, bark fibrous, pith yellowish white or hollowed. Odourless, taste weak.

Identification  : Moisten 1 g of the powder with concentrated ammonia, add 30 ml of chloroform, extract for 30 minutes, filter and evaporate the filtrate to dryness. Dissolve the residue in 5 ml of hydrochloric acid solution (1Õ100). Filter into three test tubes. To the first tube add 1 - 2 drops of potassium iodobismuthate TS, a yellow precipitate is produced, to the second tube add 1 - 2 drops of mercuric potassium iodide TS, a white precipitate is produced. To the third tube add 1 - 2 drops of silicontungstic acid TS, a white precipitate is produced.

Processing  :

Action  : To remove heat, subdue hyperactivity of the liver, and arrest convulsions.

Indication  : headache, dizziness, convulsion, eclampsia, hypertension

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 12 g, to be added when the decoction is nearly done.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
