Collection  : The drug is collected in winter when stem and leaves wither, removed from rhizome, bud, rootlet and soil, dried in the sun or baked to half dry. Piled up for 3 - 6 days, processed for several times until dried completely.

Description  : Subcylindrical, slightly thick at the middle part and slender at the lower part, sometimes slightly curved, 6 - 20 cm long, 1 - 3 cm in diameter. Externally greyish yellow or greyish brown with irregular longitudinal grooves, transverse lenticels, sparse transverse fissures and numerous rootlet scars. Texture compact, easily broken, fracture black, somewhat lustrous. Odour characteristic resembling caramel, taste sweetish and slightly bitter.

Identification  : Transverse section: Cortex relatively broad, stone cells scattered singly or 2 - 5 in groups, polygonal, subrounded or subsquare with thicker walls and distinct striations. Phloem rays much cleft, cambium in a ring. Xylem rays broad, also much cleft, vessels less, subpolygonal up to 113 µm in diameter, accompanied with wood fibres. Parenchymatous cells containing nucleus-like substance.Total ash: Not more than 5.0%

Processing  : Eliminate remains of rhizomes and foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into slices and dry or soak briefly in water. Steam thoroughly, air dry briefly then cut into thin slices and dry completely.

Action  : To reduce heat from blood, to nourish yin, to quench fire, and to counteract toxicity.

Indication  : febrile diseases with impairment of yin manifested by deep red tongue and intense thirst, or with eruptions; constipation due to impairment of body fluid; phthisis with cough; conjunctivitis, sore throat, scrofula, diphtheria, boils and sores

Precautions  : Incompatible with Rhizoma et Radix Veratri.

Dosage  : 9 to 15 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from mould and moth.
