Description : In cylindrical woody segment, varying in length, some somewhat curved, usually about 1m long, 10 - 30cm in diameter. Externally pale yellow or yellowish brown, fine and smooth, some with nodal scars or longitudinal cracks, transversely cut surface brownish yellow, showing oil stains. Brown annual rings distinct or indistinct, longitudinally cut surface showing straight striations. Texture compact, uneasily broken, odour aromatic, strongly aromatic on burning, taste slight, slightly pungent on chewing.
Identification : 1.Transverse section: Vessels scattered singly, 2 - 3 aggregated occasionally. Wood rays consisting of 1 - 2 rows of radially elongated cells. The differences between wood fibre and fibre tracheid indistinct. Wood parenchymatous cells scattered singly or several aggregated in vessels, ray cells and wood parenchymatous cells.2.To the volatile oil obtained under the assay, add ether to produce a solution containing 10 µl per ml as the test solution. Dissolve santalol CRS in ether to produce a solution containing 5µl per ml ( or the volatile oil of India Sandalwood add ether to produce a solution containing 10µl per ml) as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G as the coating substance and petroleum ether (60 - 90ºC)-ethyl acetate (85 -15) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 10µl of each of the two solution. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air and spray with þ-dimethylaminobenaldehyde solution (dissolve 0.25 of þ-dimethylaminobenaldehyde in 50g of glacial acetic acid, add 5g of 85% phosphoric acid and 20ml of water, mix well), heat at 80 - 90ºC for minutes. The purplish blue spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and colour to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.Water: Carry out the method for the determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 2), not more than 12.0%Assay: Carry out the method for the determination of volatile oil (Appendix X D) using 30g of the wood shavings of the drug (1mm thick). It contains not less than 3.0% of volatile oil (ml/g).
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, cut into slices or saw into small sections and split to small pieces.
Action : To promote the flow of qi in the heart, to warm the spleen and stomach, to increase appetite, and to relieve pain.
Indication : pectoral and abdominal pain due to stagnation of qi by cold; epigastric pain with anorexia; angina pectoris in coronary heart disease
Precautions :
Dosage : 2 to 5 g.
Storage : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
