Historical Use of Rosa laevigata

Rosa laevigata in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Jinyingzi

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Cherokee Rose-hip

Specific Name  : Fructus rosae laevigatae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in October and November, when the fruit turns red, dried and remove from bristle.

Description  : Pseudo carp developed from receptacle, ovoid, 2 - 3.5cm long, 1 - 2cm in diameter. Externally reddish yellow with raised brown small scars of the fallen bristles. A dish like calyx remained at the apex with style base at the mioddle and the lower part gradually tapered. Texture hard, on cutting the walls of the receptacle 1 -2mm thick with numerous small achenes inside. The inner surface of the receptacle and achenes with yellowish tomenta, odorless, taste sweetish and slightly astringent.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section of receptacle wall: outer epidermal cells subsquare or slightly radially elongated with thickened and cutinized outer and lateral walls. Cells of bristle scars on epidermis in longitudinal section radially elongated. Parenchymatous cells with slightly thickened and distinctly pitted walls, containing oil droplets and orange yellow contents. Some containing prisms and clusters of calcium oxalate, fiber bundles in the outer part of the cortex, collateral vascular bundles mostly situated in the central part of the cortex with fiber bundles outside phloem, vessels scattered or Radially arrange. Inner epidermal cells rectangular with thickened and cutinized inner walls non-glandular hairs of their remains lignified. Powder of receptacle: Pale flesh colored, non-glandular hairs of one or more cells, 505 - 1836µm long, 16 - 31µm in diameter with lignified or slightly lignified walls and slightly curved and oblique striation on the surface, lumina containing yellowish brown contents. Epidermal cells polygonal, thick walled and containing yellowish brown contents. Prisms of calcium oxalate abundant, rectangular or irregular, 16 - 39µm in diameter, clusters sometimes visible, 27 - 66µm in diameter. Spiral reticulate annular and bordered pitted vessels 8 - 20µm in diameter. Parenchymatous cells polygonal, lignified pitted and containing yellowish brown contents. Fibers fusiform or stripy yellow up to 1071µm long, 16 - 20µm in diameter with lignified walls. Masses of resin irregular in shape, yellowish brown and transluscent.2. Heat 5g of the powder in 50ml of water on a water bath at 60ºC for 15 minutes and filter immediately. To 1ml of the filtrate and 4 - 5 drops of alkaline cupric tartrate TS, heat on a water bath for 5 minutes. A reddish brown precipitate is produced. To another 1ml of the filtrate add 1 - 2 drops of 1% ferric chloride solution, a dark color is produced.3. Shake vigorously 2 ml of the above filtrate in a stoppered tube for 1 minute, a large amount of honeycomb like foam is produced which persist for 10 minutes

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash and dry.Pulp of Fructus Rosae Laevigatae: soak briefly, soften thoroughly, halve longitudinally, remove hair and achenes and then dry.

Action  : To arrest seminal emission, to restrain urination, and to check diarrhea.

Indication  : nocturnal emission; spermatorrhea; enuresis, frequent urination; abnormal uterine bleeding; excessive leukorrhea; protracted diarrhea; chronic dysentery

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 12 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place, protected from moth.
