Collection  : The drug is collected in spring and autumn, removed from the fibrous root, washed clean, blanched in boiling water or steamed to soften and dried.

Description  : Duhuanging: Fleshly tuberculated, up to more than 10 cm long, 3 - 6 cm wide, 2 - 3 cm thick. Externally pale yellow to yellowish brown with ring shape nodes, striations and fibrous root scar, the upper part of the nodes showing lateral stem scars orbitulate with a sunken circumference and prominent center. Texture hard and tenacious, uneasily broken, fracture horny, pale yellow to yellowish brown. Odour slight, taste sweet and viscous in chewing.Jitouhuangjing: Tubercles curved and cylindrical, 3 - 10 cm long, 0.5 - 1.5 cm in diameter. Node 2 - 4 cm long, somewhat conical, often branched, externally yellowish white or greyish yellow, translucent with longitudinal wrinkles, round stem scars 5 - 8 mm in diameter.Jiangxinghuangjing: Elongated tubercles, varying length, often connected in groups of several tubercles. Externally greyish yellow or yellowish brown, rough bearing prominent and orbiculate stem scars on the upper part of nodes, 0.8 - 1.5 cm in diameter. Not to be used as drugs if it taste bitter.Identification: Transverse section of Rhizome:Dahuangjing: External walls of epidermal cells relatively thick. Numerous large mucilaginous cells containing raphides of calcium oxalate, scattered in parenchyma. Vascular bundles scattered throughout, usually in amphivasal type.Jitouhuangjing, Jiangxinghuangjing: Vascular bundles usually in collateral-type.

Processing  : Rhizoma Polygonati: Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, slightly soften, cut into thick slices and dry.Rhizoma Polygonati (processed with wine): Stew or steam thoroughly as describe under the method for stewing with wine or steaming with wine (Appendix ll D). Dry briefly in the air, cut into thick slices and dry. To each 100 kg of Rhizoma Polygonati add 20 kg of yellow rice wine.

Action  :

Indication  : weakness of the spleen and the stomach marked by lasitude, dryness in the mouth and anorexia; dry cough due to deficiency of the lung; deficiency of vital essence and blood; diabetes caused by internal heat
