Collection  : The drug is collected in winter when the fruit is ripe, remove from foreign matter and dried.

Description  : Collective fruit, composed of numerous small capsules, spheroidal, 2 - 3cm in diameter with a fruit stalk at the base. Externally greyish brown or brown, bearing numerous acute spines and small beaked obtuse spines, 0.5 - 1mmlong, often broken. Small capsules acrocidal showing small honeycomb-shape holes. Texture light and hard, uneasily broken, odor slight and taste weak.

Action  : To dispel wind and remove obstruction from the collaterals, to cause diuresis, and to stimulate menstrual discharge.

Indication  : arthralgia with numbness and muscular contracture; edeam; lack of lactation; amenorrhea

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.

Collection  : The drug is collected from October to next April and dried in the shade.

Description  : Irregular pieces, pale yellow or yellowish brown, translucent or opaque. Texture fragile, fracture lustrous, odour aromatic, taste weak.

Identification  : 1.Burn a small quantity of the resin, the flame has much fume with characteristic and aromatic odour.2.Place 50 mg in a test tube, add 5 ml of carbon tetrachloride, shake to dissolve. Add 2 ml of sulfuric acid along the tube wall, a red ring is produced at the junction of the two layers.3.Suspend 0.2g in 5 ml of carbon tetrachloride with shaking, add 3 ml of nitric acid, shake well gently, allow to stand until separation takes place, a pale red to reddish orange color is produced in the upper layer.

Action  : To promote blood circulation and relieve pain, to counteract toxicity, to stimulate tissue regeneration, and to reduce heat from blood.

Indication  : traumatic injuries, swelling and pain of carbuncle and boil, spitting of blood, epistaxis and traumatic hemorrhage

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 1.5 to 3 g, used in making pills or powder; appropriate quantity for external use.

Storage  : Preserve in well closed containers, nd stored in a cool place.
