Collection : The drug is collected in spring, removed from influorences, cut into sections and dried in the sun.
Description : Flattened cylindrical, slightly curved, 5 - 15cm long, 1.5 - 5cm in diameter. Externally brown, rough with distinct longitudinal furrows and irregular pits, some with remains of triangular, dark brown scales. Texture heavy, hard, uneasily broken, fracture pale brown with yellow triangular vascular bundles. Odour slight, taste sweet and astringent.
Identification : To 0.5g of the powder, add 4ml of water, macerate for 15 minutes, shake and filter. Carry out the method of ascending paper chromatography (Appendix Vl A). Apply the quantity of the filtrate to the filter paper using n-propyl alcohol- glacial acetic acid- ethanol -water (4:1:1:2) as the mobile phase. After developing and removal of the paper, dry it in the air and spray with isatin TS, dry and heat at 100ºC for about 30 seconds, a bluish green spot is produced.
Processing : Wash, soften thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry.
Action : To reinforce the kidney yang, to replenish vital essence, and blood, and to relax bowels.
Indication : aching and weakness of the loins and knees; impotence, spermatorrhea, constipation
Precautions :
Dosage : 5 to 9 g.
Storage : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
