Specific Name : Radix curcumae
Scientific Name:
Collection : The drug is collected in winter when stem and leaves wither, removed from soil and rootlets, steamed or boiled thoroughly and dried.
Description : Wen Yujin: Oblong or ovoid, slightly compressed or curved, the two ends tapering, 3.5 - 7 cm long, 1.2 - 2.5 cm in diameter. Externally pale brown or greyish brown with irregular longitudinal wrinkles, the raised longitudinal wrinkles pale in colour. Texture compact fracture greyish brown and horny. Endodermis ring distinct. Odour slightly aromatic, taste slightly bitter. Huang Si Yujin: Fusiform, sometimes slender at one end. 2.5 - 4.5 cm long, 1 - 1.8 cm in diameter, externally brownish grey or greyish yellow with fine wrinkles. Fracture orange but edges brownish yellow to brownish red. Odour aromatic, taste pungent.Gui Yujin: Long conical or oblong. 2 - 6.5 cm long, 1 - 1.8 cm in diameter. Odour slight, taste slightly pungent and bitter.LüSi Yujin: Long ellipsoid rather stout, 1.5 - 3.5cm long, 1 - 1.2 cm in diameter. Odour slight, taste weak.
Identification : Transverse sectionWen Yujin: Epidermal cells sometimes remaining, the outer walls slightly thickened. Velamen narrow, composed of 4 - 8 layers of cells with slightly sinous and thin walls regularly arranged. Cortex ½ as wide as the diameter of the root, oil cells poorly visible, endodermis distinct. In stele, phloem bundle and xylem bundles 40 - 55 respectively, vessels 2 - 4 in xylem bundle and xylem fibres slightly lignified. Vessels polygonal thin walled, 20 - 90µm in diameter. All starch granules in parenchymatous cells gelatinized.Huang Si Yujin: The walls of the inner most layer of velamen thickened. Sometimes xylem vessels and fibres arranged in a continuous ring, oil cells numerous, pigment cells scattered throughout parenchyma.Gui Yujin: The walls of velamen occasionally thickened, the inner side of velamen showing 1 - 2 rows of sclerenchymatous cells arranged in a ring with distinct striations. Vessels subrounded up to 160µm in diameter.Lü Yujin: The cells of velamen not thickened. At the outside of the stele cortex frequently exhibiting pigment cells. Phloem bundle shriveled, xylem bundles more, 64 - 72 vessels flattened.Water: Carry out the determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 2) not more than 15.0%.Total ash: Not more than 9.0%
Processing : Wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry, or wash clean, dry, and then break to pieces.

Specific Name : Rhizoma curcumae longae
Scientific Name:
Collection : The drug is collected in winter when the aerial part wither, wash clean, boiled or steamed thoroughly, dried in the sun and removed from fibrous root.
Description : Irregularly ovoid, cylindrical or fusiform, frequently curved, some short branched in Y-shape, 2 - 5 cm long, 1 - 3 cm in diameter. Externally dark yellow, rough with wrinkled striations and distinct rings and exhibiting some rounded scars of branched rhizomes and fibrous roots scars. Texture hard, uneasily broken, fracture brownish yellow to golden yellow, horny with wax lustre, endodermis ring distinct, scattered with dotted vascular bundles. Odour characteristic and aromatic, taste bitter and pungent.
Identification : 1.Transverse section: Epidermis consisting of 1 layer of cells, flattened, thin walled. Cortex broad, scattered with leaf trace bundles at the outside near the epidermis 6 - 8 layers of cork cells present, flattened thin walled, regularly arranged, endodermal cells consisting of 1 - 2 rows of parenchymatous cells. Closed collateral bundles scattered, some more near the pericycle, lessened inward. Parenchymatous cell pack with droplets of volatile oil, starch granules and reddish brown pigments.2.Place a small quantity of powder on a piece of filter paper, add 1 drop of each of ethanol and ether. Allow to dry and discard the powder. The filter paper becomes yellow which turns gradually to orange on adding 1 drop of warm saturated solution of boric acid, to bluish black and gradually to brown on adding 1 drop of ammonia TS and to orange again on long standing.Water: Carry out the determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 2) not more than 16.0%Total ash: Not more than 7.0% (Appendix lX K)Acid Insoluble ash: Not more than 1.0% (Appendix lX K)Assay: Carry out the method for determination of volatile oil (Appendix X D). It contains not less than 7.0% (ml/g) of volatile oil.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, soak briefly, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into thick slices and dry in the sun.
Action : To eliminate blood stasis, promote the flow of qi, stimulate menstrual discharge and relieve pain.
Indication : pricking pain in the chest and hypochondriac regions; amenorrhea; mass formation in the abdomen; rheumatic pain in the shoulders and arms; traumatic swelling and pain
Precautions :
Dosage : 3 to 9 g; appropriate quantity for external use.
Storage : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
