Collection : The plant is collected in late autumn and early winter when the fruit is ripe but not dehiscent, dried in the sun, seed tapped out, removed from foreign matters and dried in the sun.
Description : Somewhat reniform, slightly flattened, 2 - 2.5 cm long, 1.5 - 2mm wide about 1 mm thick. Externally smooth, brownish green or greyish brown with a rounded hilum located on one slightly dented edge. Texture hard, uneasily broken. 2 cotyledons, pale yellow, redicle curve about 1mm long. Odourless, taste weak and bean like on chewing.Identification: Break 1 g of the drug to pieces. Add 10 ml of ether, heat under reflux on a water bath for 10 minutes, filter and discard the ether solution. Heat the residue to expel ather, add 5 ml of methanol, reflux on a hot water bath for 10 minutes and filter. Spot 1 drop of the filtrate on a piece of filter paper. Examine under ultra violet light (365 nm), a purplish red fluorescence is shown. Add 2 drops of methanol and allow the spot to disperse, a brilliant yellow ring is shown inside the purplish red fluorescent ring.
Identification :
Processing : Eliminate foreign matters wash and dry.Processed with salt: Stir fry as described under the method for stir frying with salt water (Appendix ll D) to dryness.
Action : To benefit the liver and the kidney, arrest seminal discharge, restrain urination and improve eyesight.
Indication : back pain; nocturnal emission and premature ejaculation in deficiency syndromes of the kidney; turbid discharge with urination, excessive leukorrhea; dribbling of urine after urination; dizziness and blurred vision
Precautions :
Dosage : 9 to 15 g.
Storage : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
