Collection  : The ripe fruit is collected in later autumn and early winter. The seed collected and removed from the pulp and shell (endocarp) and dried in the sun.

Description  : Oblate or flattened ellipsoidal, 5 - 9 mm long, 5 - 7 mm wide, about 3 mm thick. External purplish-red or purplish brown, smooth, lustrous some fissured. One surface even with 1 raised longitudinal line in the center. The other surface slightly raised. One end dented, showing a linear hilum, the other end having finely raised chalaza. Testa fragile, endosperm white, cotyledons 2, pale yellow, oily, odor slight taste weak.

Identification  : (1)Powder: Brownish red, palisade cells of testa brownish red, polygonal in surface view, about 15 µm in diameter with thickened and lignified walls and small lumen. Cells of tegmen brownish yellow, rectangular or sub-square with beaded and lignified walls in surface view. Epidermal cells of cotyledon containing fine clusters of prism of calcium oxalate.(2)To 1g of the powder add 30 ml of methanol, heat under reflux for 1 hour and filter. Evaporate the filtrate to dryness, dissolve the residue in 0.5 ml of methanol used as the test solution. Dissolve jujuboside ACRS and jujuboside B CRS in methanol to produce a mixture containing 1 mg of each per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G as the coating substance and n-butanol saturated with water as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 10µl of each of the two solutions. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air. Spray with 1% solution of vanillin in sulfuric acid and examine immediately. The spots in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and colour to the spots in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.Foreign matter: Not more than 5% (Appendix 1X A)

Action  : To replenish the liver, to cause tranquilizations, to arrest excessive perspiration, and to promote the production of body fluid.

Indication  : insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep; excessive sweating due to debility; thirst due to consumption of body fluid
