Collection  : The drug is collected from autumn when ripe. Removed from foreign matter and dried in the sun.

Description  : Spheroidal, 4 - 6mm in diameter, externally greyish black or blackish brown, covered with greyish white frost like hairs, bearing 4 longitudinal shallow furrows, apex slightly concave with greyish white, persistent calyx and short fruit stalk at the base. Calyx is 1/3 - 2/3 length of the fruit, 5 toothed, 2 of them relatively deep, covered with densely pubescent. Texture light and hard, uneasily broken. Transverse section showing 4 loculi, each with one seed. Odour characteristic and aromatic, taste weak and slightly pungent.

Identification  : Powder: Greyish brown, epidermal cells of calyx subrounded, walls frequently sinous, non-glndular hairs 2 - 3 celled, apical cell relatively wide with warty protrudings. Cells of epicarp polygonal with cuticle striations and scar of the hairs bearing glandular hairs and non-glandular hairs in two types. One with a unicellular head and a 1 - 2 celled stalk and the other a 2 -6 celled, 14 - 68µm long, often curved, warty walled. Cells of mesocarp oblong or subrounded, walls slightly lignified and with distinct pits. Vittae frequently broken containing secretions, adjacent cells containing pale yellow oil droplets. Stone cells of endocarp elliptical or subsquare. 10 - 35µm in diameter. Cells of testa rounded or subrounded, 42 - 73µm in diameter with reticulate striated and lignified walls.

Action  :

Indication  : headache in upper respiratory tract infection; painful swelling of the gums; inflammation of the eye with lacrimation, blurring of vision and dizziness
