Verbena officinalis in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Mabiancao

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :European verbena herb

Specific Name  : Herba verbanae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected at flowering from June to August, remove from foreign matter and dried in the sun.

Description  : Stems square, frequently branched with longitudinal furrows on the four sides. 0.5 - 1m long, externally greenish brown, rough, texture hard and fragile, fracture medullated or hollowed. Leaves opposite crumpled and mostly broken, greenish brown when whole, lamina 3 partite, spike slender with numerous small flowers. Odorless and taste bitter.

Identification  : To 2g of the powder add 60ml of 80% methanol, heat under reflux on a water bath for 1 hour, filter, evaporate the filtrate to dryness. Dissolve the residue in 2ml of methanol and use it as the test solution. Prepare a solution of Herbe verbenae reference drug in the same manner as the reference drug solution. Dissolve oleanolic CRS to produce a solution containing 1mg per ml used as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B), using silica gel G containing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the coating substance and chloroform-methanol-isopropanol (16:0.5:0.25 as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 2 - 4µl each of the above three solutions. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with a mixture of vanillin ethanol solution (1:100) and a water solution of perchloric acid (3:100) (mix in equal portions before use), dry it in the air until the colored spots appear clearly. A spot in the chromatogram obtained from the test solution corresponds in colour and position to the spot in the chromatogram obtained from the reference solution and the reference drug solution.

Processing  : Eliminate remain roots and foreign matter, wash clean, soften briefly, cut into sections and dry in the sun.

Action  : To promote the flow of blood and to relieve blood stasis, to stop malarial attacks, to counteract toxicity, and to cause diuresis.
