Collection : The plant is collected in summer when the fruit is ripe but not dehiscent and dried in the sun. The seed is gathered, remove from foreign matter and dried again in the sun
Description : Spheroidal about 2 mm in diameter. Externally black, a few in reddish brown, somewhat lustrous with fine and dense granular protuberance and concave longitudinal furrow on one side. Texture hard, endosperm white, embryo curved in a ring, 2 cotyledons. Odorless, taste slightly astringent and bitter.
Identification : Powder: greyish brown. Epidermal cells of testa reddish brown or yellowish brown. Polygonal or elongated polygonal in surface view, 50 - 120µm in diameter, anticlinal walls thickened, stellate or sinuate. Inner epidermal cells of testa pale yellowish brown, subsquare or sub-rectangular or polygonal in surface view, anticlinal walls densely beaded, reticulated striations visible on surface. Endosperm cells polygonal, sub-square or surectangular. Lumina filled with starch granules and aleurone grains. Cotyledon cells containing fatty oil droplets.Total ash: Not more than 4.0% (Appendix lX K)
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter.Stir fried: Stir fry as described under the method for simple stir frying (Appendix 11 D) until most of the seeds burst.
Action : To promote the menstrual flow and the flow of milk, and to ause the subsidence of swelling.
Indication : galactostasis, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, mastitis with swelling and pain
Precautions : Used with caution in pregnancy.
Dosage : 4.5 to 9 g.
Storage : Preserve in a dry place.
