Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn, removed from the fibrous root and the outer bark. Fumigated with burning sulfur for 1 - 2 times and drifted in the sun.

Description  : Ellipsoidal or ovoid, 2 - 5 cm long, 1 - 3 cm in diameter. Externally white to yellowish white, slightly rough, exhibiting annulations and fibrous root scars, top mark with stem scars and bud scars. Texture hard, fracture white, starchy. Odorless, taste: weak with numb and pungent sensation.

Identification  : Transverse section: Sometimes cork cells adhering. Endodermis indistinct. Parenchyma scattered with large mucilage cavities, relatively large in the outer part, usually ringed, gradually becoming small and rare to center, mucilage cells found everywhere containing of calcium oxalate. Vascular bundles scattered collateral and amphivasal. Parenchymatous cells containing abundant starch granules.Powder: Yellowish white. Starch granules abundant, simple granules spherical or sub-spherical, 2 - 29 µm in diameter, hilum pointed, slit shape or V shape, compound granules of 2 - 12 components among which 2 - 4 components visible frequently. Needle crystals of calcium oxalate scattered or in bundles embedded in mucilage cells, needle crystal 97 (-136) µm long. Spiral and annular vessels 45 µm in diameter.

Processing  : Rhizoma Typhonii unprocessed: Eliminate foreign matters.Rhizoma typhonii (processed): Grade clean Rhizoma Typhonii according to size, soak in water and exchange water 2 - 3 times everyday. After several days, some foams emerge, change water again, add a quality of alumen equivalent to 2 kg of alumen per 100 kg of Rhizoma Typhonii. Soak again in water for a day and change water until the drug has slight numbing feeling to the tongue and take it out. Put the slices of Rhizome Zingiberis Recens and powder of alumen in a pan and boil with a quantity of water, then add Rhizoma typhonii, mix well and boil until the cut surface of the drug is devoid of a dry core. Take out, remove the slices of Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, dry it partially in the shade, cut into thick slices and dry. To each 100kg of Rhizoma Typhonii add 12.5 kg of each of Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens and alumen. It is sub-rounded or elliptic thick slices, pale brown at the edge, yellow at the cut surface and horny. Odor slight taste, weak with slight numb and pungent sensation.

Action  : To eliminate blood stasis with strong effect, promote the flow of qi, remove the retention of undigested food, and relieve pain.

Indication  : stroke with gurgling in the throat, deviation of the eye and the mouth and impairment of speech; upward invasion of phlegm causing headache and dizziness, heaviness of the body, restlessness, fidgetness, nausea and cold extremities, or migraine; sore throat; tetanus; external use for scrofula, venomous snakebite

Precautions  : Be cautions when the unprocessed tuber is taken orally. Used with caution in pregnancy.

Dosage  : Ususally used after processed, 3 to 6 g; for external use, appropriate quantity of the unprocessed tuber to be pounded into paste, stewed into soft extract or ground into powder (mixed with wine), and applied topially.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place, protected from moth.
