Other Names:
Historical Use of Trigonella foenum-graecum
Trigonella foenum-graecum in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Background
Chinese Name (pinyin): Huluba
Chinese Name :
Common Name :Common Fenugreek Seed
Specific Name : Semen trigonellae
Scientific Name:
Collection : The plant is collected in summer when the fruit is ripe, dried in the sun. The seed is tapped out and remove from foreign matter.
Description : Slightly rhomboid or rectangular, 3 - 4 mm long, 2 - 3 mm wide about 2mm thick. Externally yellowish green or yellowish brown, smooth with a deep oblique furrow on each of the two sides and a point like hilum at the intersection of the two furrows. Texture hard, uneasily broken. Testa thin, endosperm translucent and viscous, 2 cotyledons, pale yellow, radicle curved plump and long, odor aromatic, taste slightly bitter.
Identification : Transverse section: Palisade cells of epidermis 1 layer with thickened outer and upper lateral walls a relatively large lumen at the lower part. Longitudinal pit canals fine and close. The light bend situated in outer part at 1/3 length of the cells with cuticle. Supporting cells 1 layer, somewhat dumbell shaped, narrow at the upper end but broader at the lower end with linear striations on anticlinal walls. Endosperm mostly consisting of mucilage cells with highly thickened walls. Cotyledon cells containing aleurone grains and fatty oil droplets.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, wash, clean and dry.Processed with salt: Stir fry as described under the method for stir frying with salt water (Appendix 11 D) until it becomes inflated and scenty Break to pieces before use.
Action : To warm the kidney , dispel cold, and relieve pain.
Indication : cold syndrome of the kidney due to yang deficiency marked by pain and coldness in the lower abdomen; hernia; weakness and edema of the legs caused by cold=damp
Precautions : .
