Collection  : The drug is collected from winter to next spring, remove from foreign matter and dried in the sun.

Description  : Stem cylindrical, curved much branched, varying in length, 1-5mm in diameter, externally reddish-brown with dotted lenticels and adventitious roots, texture hard, fracture pale yellowish-white, frequently hollowed. Leaves opposite, short petioled, when whole, eliptical or ovate-ovate lanceolate, 1-8cm long, 0.7-3.5cm wide, margins entire, slightly rolled, upper surface dark green or brownish-green, lower surface relatively pale colored. Texture leathery, odor slight and taste slightly bitter.

Identification  : Trasverse section, cork of several rows of brownish-red cells, externally unicellular non-grandular hairs visible, thick walled and warty. The inner side of the cork processing cycle of stone cells, between cork and cycle of the stone cells occuring prisms of calcium oxalate, Cortex narrow, phloem thin, nonlignified fiber bundle in the outer side, interruptedly arranged in a ring, Cambium in a ring. Xylem consisting of lignified cells, vessels subrounded, sparsely scattered sngly. The inner part of the xylem occuring internal cambium andf phloem. In pith lignified fibers in bundle sorounded by parenchymatous cells containing prisms of calcium oxalate. Pith usually ruptured.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften briefly cut into sections and dry.

Action  : To dispel wind and remove obstruction from channels and to remove heat from blood and cause subsidence of swelling.

Indication  : rheumatic arthritis with muscular contracture, aching of the loins and knees; inflammation of the throat, carbuncle and boils; traumatic injuries

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 12 g; for external use. The fresh drug of appropriate quantity to be pounded into paste for topical application.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
