Collection  : The drug is collected all year round dried in the sun or remove the coarse bark and dried in the sun.

Description  : Root barks irregular pieces of quills, varying in length and width, 0.3-1cm thick. Outer surface greyish-yellow or yellowish brown, rough with numerous prominent longitudinal lenticels and irregular striations fissured transversely and longitudinally, the outer surface of the drug freed from rough bark, yellowish white. Inner surface pale yellow, relatively even, densely covered with small spindle shaped holes or spots. Texture hard and fragile, fracture granular at the outer part, fibrous at the inner part. Odor slight and taste bitter. Stem bark irregular plates or pieces, varying in size, 0.5-2cm thick. Outer surface greyish black very rough and deeply fissured.

Identification  : 1.Powder of root bark, pale greyish yellow, stone cells numerous, subrounded, subsquare or irregular in shape, 24-96µm in diameter, walls thickened or thicker on three sides or thiner at one side, some lumina containing prism of calcium oxalate. Fibres 20-40µm in diameter, walls extremely thickened, lignified. Prism of calcium oxalate, 11-48µm in diameter, clusters up to 48µm in diameter. Starch granules, subspherical or ovoid 3-13µm in diameter. Powder of stem bark: greyish yellow, fragments of cork cells numerous, cluster of calcium oxalate occasionally present, starch granules absent.2.To 10g of the powder, add 50ml of methanol, heat under reflux for 30 minutes, filter while hot. Evaporate 1ml of the filtrate to dryness on the water bath, dissolve the residue in 1ml of glacial acetic acid, add 1ml of a solution of acetic anhydride-sulfuric acid (19:1), the colour of the solution turns quickly from yellow green to dirty green.

Processing  : eliminarte foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into slivers or sections and dry.Stir fried with bran: stir fry the slivers as described under the method of stir frying with bran (appendix ll D) until slightly yellow colour is produced.

Action  : To remove damp-heat and arrest discharges (leukorrhea, diarrhea and hemorrhage).

Indication  : leukorrhea; diarrhea caused by damp-heat; chronic diarrhea, chronic dysentery; hematochezia, abnormal uterine bleeding

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place, protected from moth.
