Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn and winter when ripe, removed from forein matter and dried in the sun.

Description  : Oblong or ovoid, 2 - 4cm long, 2 - 2.5cm in diameter. Externally yellowish brown or dark brown, somewhat lustrous marked with 5 - 6 longitudinal ribs and irregular wrinkles, base with rounded fruit stalk scar. Texture compact, sarcocarp 2 - 4mm thick, yellowish brown or dark yellowish brown, kernels 1.5 - 2.5cm long, 1 - 1.5cm in diameter, pale yellow, rough and hard. Seeds narrowly fusiform, about 1cm long, 2 - 4mm in diameter, testa yellowish brown, cotelydons 2, white, overlapping and convolate, odorless, taste sour, astringent then sweet.

Identification  : Macerate 3g of the powder in 30ml of water for 3 hours, filter. To 2ml of the filtrate, add 1 drop od ferric chloride TS, a deep blue precipitate is produced. To 2ml of the filtrate add 1 drop of sodium chloride gelatine TS, a white precipitate is produced.

Processing  : Fructus chebulae, eliminate foreign matter, wash clean and dry. Break to pieces before use. Sarcocarp of Fructus chebulae: macerate clean fructus chebulae briefly, cover to soften, remove the kernels and dry.

Action  : To chack diarrhea and chronic cough, and to soothe the sore throat.

Indication  : protracted diarrhea with hematochezia and prolapse of the rectum; chronic cough with sore throat and hoarseness

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
