Collection : The drug is collected from spring to autumn at the early stage of flowering, remove from for4eign matter, washed clean and dried in the sun.
Description : Crumpled and rolled masses, roots conical, frequently curved, 3 - 7cm long, externally brown, crumpled, the root stock with brown or yellowish white hairs, some fallen off. Leaves basal frequently crumpled and broken when whole, oblanceolate, greenish brown or dark grey, apex acute or obtuse, margins lobate or pinnatifid. Base becoming narrow downwards to petiole-shape. Midrib of lower surface distinct. Pedicels 1 or more, each with capitulum on the top, involcreseveral rows, the inner row relatively long, corolla yellowish-brown or pale yellowish-white. Some showing numerous long elliptical achenes with white aigrets. Odour slight and slightly bitter.
Identification : Leaf in surface view; The epidermal cells on both surfaces with sinuous anticlinal walls, cuticle striations distinct or sparsely visible. Both surfaces bearing nonglandular hairs, 3 - 9 celled, 17 - 34µm in diameter. Apical cells extremely long, crumpled to whip-shape or fallen off. Stomata more frequently occurring on the lower surface. Anomocytic or anisocytic with 3 - 6 subsidiary cells, mesophyll containing fine crystals of calcium oxalate. Laticiferous tube alongside the veins visible.Transverse section of root: Cork consisting of several layers of brown cells. Phloem broad, groups of laticiferous tubes arranged in several interrupted rings. Cambium in ring, xylem relatively small with distinct rays, vessels large scattered. Parenchymatous cells containing inulin.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, wash cut into section and dry in the sun.
Action : To remove toxic heat, to cause subsidence of swelling and nodulation, and to relieve dysuria.

Precautions :
Dosage : 9 to 15 g; for external use, appropriate quantity of the fresh herb to be pounded into paste for topical application or made into hot decoction for fumigation and irrigation.
Storage : Preserve in a ventilated dry place, protected from moisture and moth.
