Collection : The drug is caught in summer and autumn. For Solenognathus hardwickii and syngnathoides biaculeatus, the skin and viscera are removed, wash clean and dried in the sun. For Singnathus acus, wash clean and dried in the sun.
Description : Body of Solenognathus hardwickii: Narrow long and laterally flattened. 30 - 50 cm long, the surface yellowish white or greyish brown. A long tubular snout in the front of the head. The mouth small, toothless, eyes rounded and deeply sunken. The head forming somewhat obtuse angle with axis of the body. The trunk 3 cm wide , five ridged. The anterior part of the tail six ridged, the posterior part tapered off, four ridged and coiled at the end. A stripe of greyish black spots at both sides of the dorsal ridge whole body covered with striated bony rings and with fine transverse streaks. Projected granular spines occurring in each bony ring. The pectorial fin short and wide, dorsal fin long, sometimes indistinct, caudal fin lacking. Texture bony and hard. Odour slightly stinking and taste slightly salty.

Action : To warm the kidney and promote virility, to reduce nodulation, and to induce subsidence of swelling.
Indication : impotence and seminal emission; mass in the abdomen; scrofula; traumatic injuries

Precautions :
Dosage : 3 to 9 g; for external use, appropriate quantity to be ground into powder and applied topically.
Storage : Preserve in a cool and dry place, ptoected from moth.
