Historical Use of Styrax tonkinensis
Styrax tonkinensis in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Chinese Name (pinyin): Anxixiang
Chinese Name :
Common Name :Benzoin
Specific Name : Benzoinum
Description : In irregular pieces, black, lustrous with many fine pores. Texture fragile, odour, scorching on burning, taste bitter.Acid-insoluble ash: not more than 10%
Identification : (1). Heat 0.25g in a dry test tube, an irritant, aromatic odor and numerous prismatic sublimates are produced.(2). 0.1g add 5ml of ethanol, grind and filter. To filtrate add 0.5ml of 5% ferric chloride solution in ethanol, light green color is produced which changes to yellowish-green.Loss on drying: When the coarse powder is dried over sulfuric acid in a vacuum desicator to constant weight, loses not more than 2.0% of its weight (Appendix lX G)Total Ash: Not more than 0.50% (Appendix lX K)Ethanol-insoluble matter: Extract 2.5g accurately weighed of fine powder in a Soxhlet's extractor with ethanol until extraction is complete. Dry the residue to constant weght at 100ºC not more than 2.0%.Assay: Weigh accurately 1.5g of the powder in a flask, add 25ml of ethanolic potassium hydroxide solution (0.5 mol/L) and heat under reflux on a water bath for 1.5 hours. Evaporate the ethanol and disperse the residue in 50ml of hot water. Allow it to cool, add 150ml of water and 50ml of magnesium sulfate solution (1?20), mix well and allow to stand for 10 minutes, filter wash the residue with 20ml of water. Acidify the combined filtrate and washings with hydrochloric acid, transfer to a separator and extract successively with 50, 40, 30, and 30ml of ether then extract the combined ether extracts with 20, 20, 10, 10, and 10ml of sodium carbonate solution (1?20) successively, washing each aqueous extract with the same 20ml ether. Acidify the combined aqueous extract with hydrochloric acid and extract again successively with 30, 20, 10 and 10ml of ether. Combine and transfer the ether extract to weighed flask. Evaporate most of the ether with a current of air and rotate the flask to disperse the residue on the inner wall of the flask. Dry the flask to constant weight over sulfuric acid in a vacuum desiccator, weigh accurately. The weight of residue represents the content of total balsamic acid in the sample. Calculate the percentage on the dried basis, subtracted the content of the ethanol-insoluble matter, the represents the content of the total balsamic acid.It contains not less than 30.0% of total balsamic acid, calculated on the basis of ethanol extractives.
Action : To restore consciousness, to activate the flow of qi and blood, and to relieve pain.
Indication : loss of consciousness in stroke and attack of noxious factors, syncope due to violent excitement or postpartum anemia; pain in the chest and epigastrium; infantile convulsion
Dosage : 0.6 to 1.5 g; mostly used in making pills or powder.
Storage : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
