Description : Fusiform or ellipsoidal, 2 - 3cm long, 1 - 1.5cm in diameter. Apex obtuse rounded base somewhat acute and oblique, bearing a pale and rounded hilum. Externally brown or dark brown, somewhat lustrous with irregular wrinkles. Testa extremely thin, fragile and easily fallen. Mesotesta relatively thick, blackish brown, loose and easily broken, swelling to spongy like when treated with water. Scattered resinous dots visible in the fracture. Endotesta can be stripped off from mesotesta, slightly coriaceus with 2 plump endosperm, broad ovoid, cotyledons 2, thin adhering closely to the inner side of endosperm similar to endosperm in size. Odor slight and taste weak viscous on chewing.
Identification : 1.Macerate several seeds in an appropriate quantity of boiling water, allow to stand for several minutes, seeds swelling to brown, translucent and spongy.2.To 0.2g of the powder add 10ml of water, heat on a water bath for 30 minutes and filter. To 4 ml of the filtrate and add 3ml of sodium hydroxxide TS and 5 ml of alkaline cupric tartrate TS, heat on a water bath, a red preicipitate is produced.Foreign matter: Not more than 4% (Appendix lX A)Water: Carry out the method for the determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 1) not more than 16.0%

Action : To remove heat from the lung, to cure sore throat, to counteract toxicity, and to relax the bowels.
Indication : hoarseness, dry cough, and sore, dry throat due to heat in the lung; constipation with headache and blood-shot eyes
Precautions :
Dosage : 2 to 3 pieces, to be soaked in boiling water or decocted.
Storage : Preserve in a dry place, protected from mould nd moth.
