Collection  : The drug is collected in spring and summer when the plant sprout or after autumn when stem and leaves wither, removed from rootlet, soil and dried in the sun.

Description  : Cylindrical, occasionally branched, 15 - 40 cm long, 1 - 2.5 cm in diameter. Externally pale yellow or yellowish white with twisted longitudinal wrinkles, scars of lateral roots and pitted hollows from which powder spread and brown splits observed. The apex with close aggregated warty traces of stems. Texture hard and fragile, easily broken, fracture split, bark fairly thin, wood with radiate striations alternating between yellow and white in colour, odour slight, taste sweet.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section: Cork consisting of several to more than 10 layers of cells. Cortex narrow, sieve tube groups of phloem distinct. Cambium in a ring. Xylem well developed, medullar rays broad, more than 10 cells wide. Parenchymatous cells containing sand crystals of calcium oxalate, mainly in ray cells.2.Macerate 1 g of the powder in 10 ml of dehydrated ethanol for 15 minutes and filter. Examine 2 ml of filtrate under an ultra violet light (365 nm), a brilliant blue and slight purple-fluorescence is shown.Acid insoluble ash: Not more than 5.0%

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into thick pieces and dry.

Action  : To relieve fever in deficiency conditions.

Indication  : fever due to deficiency of yin; consumptive fever, fever in infantile malnutrition

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated dry place, protected from moth.
