Collection : The drug is collected in autumn and winter, remove from the branch and leaf, cut into slices and dried in the sun.
Description : Epiliptical, oblong or irregular oblique slices, 0.3-1cm thick, Cork greyish brown, sometimes greyish white patches visible and appearing reddish brown when the cork exfoliated. Wood ayt the transversely cut surface reddish-brown or brown showingnumerous pores of vessels, phloem with resinous secretion reddish-brown to blackish-brown, arrange alternately with wood into 3-8 eccentri and semi-circular rings, pith inclined to one side, texture hard, odour slight and taste astringent.
Identification : Transverse section: cork of several layers of cells containing brownish-red contents. Cortex relatively narrow, showing groups of stone cells with lumen filled with brownish-red contents; parenchymuthatous cells containing prisms of calcium oxalate. Abnormal vascular bundles arrenge by phloem alternating with xylem in several whorls. In phloem the outermost being a layer of sclerenchyma cells, consisting of groups of stone cells and fibre bundles, most of rays pressed, secretory cells abundant, filled with brownish-red contents, usually several to 10 or more arranged tangentially into layers, fiber bundle relativel abundant, nonlignified to slightly lignified, sorounded by cells containing prisms of calcium oxalate forming crytal fibers, the walls of the crystal cells lignified and thickened, groups of stone cells scattered. Xylem rays sometimes containing brownish-red contents, vessels mostly single and scattered, subrounded up to 400µm in diameter, bundles of wood fibers also forming crystal fibres, a few of wood parenchymatous cells containing brownish-red contents.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into pieces and dry in the sun.
Action : To enrich the blood, to activate blood circulation, and to remove obstruction of channels and collaterals.
