Collection : The plant is cut up in late summer and early autumn when the fruit is ripe and dried in the sun, the seed is tapped out and removed from foreign matter.
Description : Bai JieZi: 1.5 - 2.3mm in diameter. Externally greyish white to pale yellow, finely reticulated with an obvious point like hilum. Testa thin and brittle, after cutting, white folded cotyledons visible, oily, odorless and taste pungent.Hang TieZi: Relatively small, 1 - 2mm in diameter, externally yellow to brownish yellow, a few dark reddish brown, odor characteristic and pungent when triturated and moistened with water.
Identification : Transverse sectionBai JieZi: Epidermal cells of testa consisting of mucilage cells having mucilage striations, hypodermis consisting of 2 rows of collenchyma cells, palisade cells consisting of one row of stone cells with thickened inner and lateral walls and thin outer wall. Endosperm consisting of 1 row sub-square cells containing aleurone grain. Parenchymatous cells of cotyledons and radicle containing oil droplets and aleurone grains.Hang JieZi: Epidermal ce4lls of testa elongated tangentially, hypodermis consisting of 1 row of thin cells.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter and break to pieces before use.Semen Sinapis (stir fried): Stir fry as described under the method for simple stir frying until it becomes deep yellow and pungent scented. Break to pieces before use.
Action : To relieve dyspnea and cough by eliminating cold-phlegm, to reduce nodulation, and to relieve pain by removing the obstruction of collaterals.
Indication : cough, asthma and distending pain of the chest caused by cold-phlegm; arthralgia accompanied by numbness due to obstruction of collaterals by phlegm; deep abscess
Precautions :
Dosage : 3 to 9 g; appropriate quantity for external use.
Storage : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place, protected from moisture.
