Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is captured in spring and summer. Stretched by a bamboo piece inserted through the head to tail and dried.

Description  : Flattened slat shape, 9 - 15 cm long, 0.5 - 1cm wide. Consisting of head and trunk, the whole body containing 22 segments. The head dark red or reddish brown, somewhat lustrous, covered with a head plate. The head plate subspherical, anterior end slightly projected, a pair of maxillipeds attached at both sides, a pair of antennae at both sides of the anterior end. The first dorsal plate of the trunk colored as the head plate, the rest 20 notums brownish green or blackish green, lustrous, usually 2 longitudinal furrowed lines for 4th dorsal plate to 20th dorsal plate, ventral light yellow or yellowish brown and wrinkled. The 2nd segment and each segment behind it bear a pair of walking legs. The walking legs yellow or reddish brown, occasionally yellowish white, hook like, the last pair of the walking legs tail like also known as uropod. Texture fragile with crevices. Odour slightly stinking with characteristic smell irritating the nose, taste pungent and slightly salty.

Identification  :

Processing  : Removed bamboo slip, wash clean, gentle heat roast until yellow, cut into sections.

Action  : To relieve convulsions, to combat poisons and cause sunsidence of nodulation, and to remove obstruction of collaterals and alleviate pain.

Indication  : infantile convulsion, tetanus, apoplectic hemiplegia; chronic rheumatic or rheumatoid arthritis; sores, lymphadenitis, venomous snake bite

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 5 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from mould and moth.
