Collection : The drug is collected in autumn and winter.
Description : Irregular pieces or granules, varying in size, externally greyish blue, greyish yellow or greyish white, some pure white, translucent, somewhat lustrous, texture light, hard and fragile, easily broken strongly hygroscopic, odourless, taste weak.
Identification : 1.Ignite and incinerate a quantity of drug, dissolve the residue in the mixture of 1 volume of hydrochloric acid and one volume of nitric acid, filter. To the filtrate add ammonium molybdate TS, shake then add ferrous sulfate TS, a blue colour is produced.2.Spot 1 drop of potassium ferrocyanide TS to a piece of filter paper, allow to dry, apply one drop of the drug solution in hydrochloric acid, 10 drops of water and 1 drop of 0.1% alizarin red solution in ethanol, a red ring in a violet spot is produced on exposing to ammonia vapour.Volume ratio: Place gently 10g of powder of medium size to a measuring cylinder. The volume is not less than 35ml.Water absorbing capacity: To 5g of the powder add 50ml of water, allow to stand for a moment, filter through moisten filter paper, the filtrate is not more than 44ml.

Action : To remove phlegm-heat from the heart and counteract convulsions.
Indication : impaired consciousness in febrile diseases, stroke, infantile convulsion, nightly crying caused by phlegm heat
Precautions :
Dosage : 3 to 9 g.
Storage : Preserve in well closed containers, stored in a dry place.
