Collection  : The drug is collected in spring during budding or autumn after withering, remove from rootlet, washed clean, dried or cut into slices while fresh an dried.

Description  : Irregular fusiform or cylindrical, slightly curved or twisted, 5 - 25 cm long, 0.5 - 2 cm in diameter. Externally greyish brown, brown or dark purple, rough with longitudinal wrinkles, transverse fissures and rootlet scars. Texture hard, fracture relatively even, bark with numerous yellowish white to yellowish brown. Wooly fibres, wood yellow or yellowish brown and approximately arranged radially. Slices irregularly rounded or elliptical. 2 - 5 mm thick, cut surface purplish red or brown. Odourless, taste slightly bitter and astringent.

Identification  : 1.To 2 g of the powder add 20 ml of ethanol, heat under reflux for about 10 minutes and filter. To the filtrate add ammonia TS dropwise to adjust to pH 8 - 9 and filter. Evaporate the filtrate to dryness. Dissolve the residue in 10 ml of water and filter. Evaporate 5 ml of the filtrate to dryness, add 1 ml of acetic andhydride and 2 drops of sulfuric acid, a red violet color is produced, becoming dark brown on standing.2.To a small quantity of the precipitate obtained under Identification (1), add 2 ml of water and 2 drops of ferric chloride TS. A bluish black colour is produced.Assay: Weigh accurately 10 g of the powder (through no. 3 sieve) Carry out the method for the determination of tanninoids (Appendix X B). It contains not less than 10.0% of tanninoids.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, for the drug not sliced, wash clean, remove remains of stems, soften thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry.(Carbonized): Stir fry the slices as described under the method for carbonizing by stir frying (Appendix ll D) until the outer part is charred while its inner part becomes brown.

Action  : To arrest bleeding by dispelling heat for blood, and to counteract toxicity and cure sores.

Indication  : hematochezia, hemorrhoidal bleeding, bloddy dysentery, abnormal uterine bleeding; scalds and burns; carbuncles, boils and sores

Precautions  : Incompatible with Rhizoma et Radix Veratri.

Dosage  : 9 to 15 g; for external use, appropriate quntity to be ground into powder nd applied topically.

Storage  : Preserve in a ventilated dry place, protected from moth.
