Description : Almost colorlessn or pale yellow, clear viscid liquid, odour slight and taste weak then slightly pungent. Freely soluble in ethanol, freely miscible with dehydrated ethanol, chloroform, ether or glacial acetic acid.Relative density: 0.956 - 0.969 at 25ºC (Appendix Vll A)Refractive index: 1.478 - 1.480 (Appendix Vll F)Acid value: Not more than 2.0 (Appendix lX N)Saponification value: 176 - 186 (Appendix lX N)Iodine value: 82 - 90 (Appendix lX N)Other oils: To 1g of the oil add 4ml of ethanol, the solution is clear then add 15 ml of ethanol, the solution should not be turbid.

Precautions : Incompatible with fat-soluble anthelmintics. Contraindicated in pregnancy.

Collection : The fruit is collected in autumn when ripe, dried in the sun, removed from pericarp and the seed is gathered.
Description : Ellipsoidal or ovoid, slightly flattened, o.9 - 1.8 cm long, 0.5 - 1cm wide. Externally smooth, alternately with greyish white and blackish brown or yellowish brown and reddish brown piebald striations. One side relatively even, bearing one prominent raphe and the other side slightly raised. A greyish white or pale brown, prominent caruncle at one end. Testa thin and brittle, endosperm plump, white and oily, 2 cotyledons, thin odorless and slightly bitter and pungent.

Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, remove the testa and break to pieces before use.
Action : To induce subsidence of swellinh and remove toxic substances, to cause purgation.
Indication : carbuncle, boil and other pyogenic infections of the skin, sore throat, scrofula; constipation
Precautions :
Dosage : For external use, appropriate quantity to be pounded into paste and applied topically; also used in making pills for oral administration.
Storage : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
