Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn when the fruit is ripe and dried in the sun.

Description  : rregularly slices or gourd shaped, varying in size, 1.5 - 3mm thick. The outer surface reddish brown, brownish yellow or dark brown, somewhat lustrous, rough with numerous warty protuberances, some with raised tubular persistent calyx and stout and short fruit stalk or its scar. The inner surface yellow or reddish brown with raised reticulated remains of fruit stalk. Texture hard and fragile, fracture yellow, somewhat granular, odourless, taste bitter and astringent.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section: Exocarp cells 1 row, arranged relatively compact, covered with cuticle. Mesocarp slightly thick, parenchymatous cells containing starch granules and clusters of prisms of calcium oxalate, stone cells single, subrounded, rectangular or irregular and rarely branched. Endocarp cells relatively small, containing starch granules and crystal of calcium oxalate and stone cells relatively small.Powder: Reddish brown, stone cells subrounded, rectangular or irregular, rarely branched, 27 - 102µm in diameter with relatively thick walls and a large lumen, some containing brown contents. Epidermal cells subsquare or subrectangular with slightly thickened walls. Clusters of calcium oxalate 10 - 25µm in diameter, prisms infrequent. Spiral and reticulate vessels 12 - 18µm in diameter. Starch granules subrounded 2 - 10µm in diameter.2.Heat 1g of the powder in 10 ml of water on a water bath at 60ºC for 10 minutes and filter while hot. To 1ml of the filtrate, add 1 drop of 1% solution of ferric chloride in ethanol, a dark green colour is produced immediately.Foreign matter: Not more than 6% (Appendix lX A)Assay: Weigh accurately about 10g of the powder (pass through a No. 3 sieve). Carry out the method for determination of tanninoids (Appendix X B). It contains not less than 10.0% of tanninoids.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, cut into pieces and dry.Carbonmized: Stir fry the pieces as describe under the method for carbonizing by stir frying (Appendix ll D) until the outer surface is charred and the inner surface turns brown.

Action  : To check diarrhea, arrest bleeding and repel worms.

Indication  : protracted diarrhea, chronic dysentery; hematochezia, prolapse of the anus; abnormal uterine bleeding, excessive leukorrhea; intestinal parasitosis with abdominal pain

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
