Collection  : The infructescence is collected in autumn when the fruit is ripe, dried in the sun. The fruit is gathered and remove from foreign matter.

Description  : Reniform, 3 - 5mm long, 2 - 4mm wide about 1.5mm thick. Externally black, blackish brown or greyish brown with fine reticulate wrinkles. Apex obtuse-rounded with a small prominence and the depressed end showing a scar of fruit stalk. Texture hard, pericarp thin, uneasily stripped from seed, 1 seed, cotyledons 2, yellowish white, oily, odor aromatic, taste pungent and slightly bitter.

Identification  : To 0.5g of the powder add 20ml of ethyl acetate, ultrasonicate for 15 minutes, filter. Evaporate the filtrate to dryness, dissolve the residue in 1ml of ethyl acetate as the test solution. Dissolve psoralen CRS and isopsoralen CRS in ethyl acetate to produce a solution containing 2mg of each per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G as the coating substance and n-hexane (8:2) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 2 - 4µl of each of the two solutions. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with a 10% solution of potassium hydroxide in methanol and examine under ultra violet light (365nm). The two bluish white fluorescent spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spots in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter.Processed with salt: stir fry as described under the method for stir frying with salt (Appendix ll D) until slightly inflated.

Action  : To invigorate the function of kidney, to alleviate asthma, and to relieve diarrhea.

Indication  : impotence, seminal emission; enuresis, frequent urination; aching of the loins and knees with cold sensation; asthma in deficiency syndromes of the kidney; diarrhea occuring daily before dawn external: vitiligo, alopecia areata

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 9 g; for external use, tincture of Fructus Psoraleae of 20% - 30% in concentration to be applied topically.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
