Description  : Subspherical, 3-6mm in diameter with short pedicle. Bracts consisting of numerous layers, scaly brown, calyx 5, greyish green or brownish red, petals 5 or numerous, yellowish white or pale pink, stamens numerous, 1 pistil, ovary densely pubescent, texture light. Odor delicately aromatic, taste slightly bitter and astringent

Collection  : The drug is collected in summer when almost ripe, baked at a low temperature and covered until turns to black color.

Description  : Subspheroidal or flattened spheroidal, 1.5 - 3cm in diameter. Externally black or brownish black, shrunken with a rounded fruit stalk scar at the base, kern hard, ellipsoidal, brownish yellow with dented spots on the surface, seeds flattened ovoid and pale yellow. Odor slight and taste extremely sour.

Identification  : Weigh accurately 4g of the most coarse powder, perform a determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 2) in a conical flask, add 100ml of water accurately measured, heat under reflux for 4 hours, cool, filter and discard the initial filtrate, collect the successive filtrate, accurately measured, add water to 80ml. Carry out the method for potentiometirc titration (Appendix Vlll A), titrate with sodium hydroxide (0.1mol/L) VS. each ml of sodium hydroxide (0.1mol/L) VS is equivalent to 6.404mg of C6 H8 O7. It contains not less than 15.0% of organic acid calculated as citric acid C6 H8 O7, on dried basis.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash, clean and dry.Pulp of Fructus Mume: Soften with water or by steaming, remove from kernels.Carbonized: Stir fry as described under the method of carbonizing by stir frying (Appendix ll D) until pericarp and pulp bulge.

Action  : To arrest persistant cough, to relieve diarrhea by astringing the intestines, to promote the production of body fluid, and to relieve colic caused by ascaris.

Indication  : persistent cough in deficiency syndromes of the lung; chronic dysentery and diarrhea; thirst in consumptive diseases; colic and vomiting caused by ascariasis

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 6 to 12 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place, protected from moisture.
