Collection : The drug is collected in spring before the sprouting of the stem, remove from soil and dried in the sun.
Description : roots cylindrical or subconical, slightly twisted, sometimes branched, 5 - 17cm long, 0.5 - 1cm diameter, externally dark brown or dark purplish red striated longitudinally, the coarse outer bark easily exfoliate, roots stocks slightly swollen, texture hard, easily broken, bark in fracture thin, dark brown, easily separated from wood rays arranged radially. Basal leaves, odd pinnate, petioled, leaflets narrowly long elliptical, margin pinnatipartite, the lower surface and petiole densely covered with greyish white, pubescences. Odour slight taste astringent and slightly bitter.
Identification : 1.Powder: Greyish brown, non-glandular, hairs numerous, unicellular, straight or curve some twisted into a loose mass, slender, 7 - 37µm in diameter up to about 4000µm long with thickened walls. Mesophyll cells containing clusters of calcium oxalate, 6 - 65µm in diameter and small prisms occasionally. Wood fibres long fusiform, 7 - 14µm in diameter, walls slightly thickened and distinctly pitted. Cork cells subpolygonal or flattened rectangular containing yellowish-brown contents.2.To 1g of the powder add 10 ml of petroleum ether (90 - 120ºC), macerate warmly for 3 hours., filter, evaporate the residue of petroleum ether to dryness, add 10ml of ethanol to the residue, filter, concentrate the filtrate to about 1ml and use it as the test solution. Prepare a solution of Herba Potentillae Chinensis reference drug in the same manner as the reference drug solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G conatining sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as the coating substance and a mixture of toluene-ethyl-formate-formic acid (5:4:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 6µl of each of the above two solutions. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with a mixture of 2% ferric chloride solution and potassium ferricyanide TS mixed in equal portions. A blue spot in the chromatogram obtained from the test solution correspond in colour and position to spot in the chromatogram obtained from the reference solution.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into sections and dry in the sun.
Action : To remove toxic heat and reduce heat in blood, and to relieve dysentery.
Indication : dysentery with bloody stools, chronic dysentery; hemorrhoidal bleeding; carbuncles and sores
Precautions :
Dosage : 9 to 15 g; for external use, appropriate quantity of the fresh herb to be decocted for washing or pounded into paste for topical application.
Storage : Preserve in a ventilated dry place.
