Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Huhuanglian

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Rhizome of Figwortflower Picrorhiza

Specific Name  : Rhizoma picrorhizae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn, removed from fibrous root and soil and dried in the sun.

Description  : Cylindrical slightly tortous, occasionally branched, 3 - 12 cm long, 0.3 - 12 cm long. 0.3 - 1 cm in diameter. Externally greyish brown to dark brown, rough with dense ringed node. Exhibiting slightly raised scars of buds and fibrous roots, closely covered with dark brown scaly remains of petioles at the upper part. Texture light, hard and fragile, easily broken, fracture somewhat even, pale brown to dark brown, wood exhibiting 4 - 10 whitish dotted vascular bundles arranged in a ring. Odour slight, taste extremely bitter.

Identification  : 1.Sublime 0.5g of the powder at a temperature of 60 - 80ºC for 4 hours. Under microscope needle crystals, needle- clusters, plates or cylindrical crystals and yellow spheroids are observed.2.Heat 5 g of the powder with 50 ml of water in a water bath at 60ºC for 20 minutes and filter. To 1 ml of the filtrate add 2 drops of ferric chloride solution in ethanol. A dark green precipitate is produced. To another 1 ml of the filtrate, add 2 drops of 5% solution of a-naphthol in ethanol, mix well. A yellowish white opalescence is produced. Along the tube wall add 0.5 ml of sulfuric acid slowly, a violet ring is shown at the interface of the two liquids, the color darkens in shaking and a deep violet precipitate is produced on diluting with water.3.Dissolve the sublimate obtained under Identification test (1) with several drops of chloroform as the test solution. To cinnamic acid CRS and vanillic acid CRS and chloroform to produce a solution containing 1 mg each per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel GF254 as the coating substance and n-hexane-ether-glacial acetic acid (5:5:0.1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate, dry it in the air and examine under ultra violet light (254 nm). The spots in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spots in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solutionWater: Carry out the determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 1) not more than 13.0%

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly and cut into thin slices or break to pieces before use.

Action  : To remove damp-heat, and to relieve comsumptive fever.

Indication  : dysentery or jaundice caused by damp-heat; hemorrhoids; consumptive fever in infantile malnutrition due to digestive disturbance

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 1.5 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
