Collection  : The drug is collected from autumn to next spring, remove from rootlet and soil, cut into slice or piece and cried in the sun or in the shade.

Description  : Irregular slices or pieces, cut transversely or longitudinally, varying thickness. The outer bark greyish yellow or greyish brown. Transversely cut pieces tortous with shrunken edges, 2 - 8 cm in diameter. Cut surface pale yellowish brown or yellowish white, wood prominent, forming several bulged concentric rings. Longitudinally cut pieces curved or rolled, 5 - 8 cm long, 1 - 2 cm wide, wood showing parallel, bulged stripes. Texture hard, odour slight, taste slightly sweet and numb after chewing for a long time.

Identification  : Transverse section:Root of Phytolacca acinosa: Cork consisting of several to over 10 layers of cells, cortex narrow. Fibro vascular tissue forming structure with several concentric cambium rings, each having dozens of vascular bundles. Phloem at the outer side of vascular bundles. Xylem at the inner side, wood fibres numerous, often several ones grouped or around the vessels. Parenchymatous cells containing raphides of calcium oxalate, a few containing prisms or clusters of calcium oxalate, also containing starch granules. Powder: Greyish white, needle crystals of calcium oxalate in bundles or scattered throughout, needle crystal fine, raphides, 40 - 72 µm long, prims or clusters of calcium oxalate observed. Wood fibres mostly in bundles, 10 - 20µm in diameter, walls thickened or slightly thickened with numerous X-shaped pits. Cork cells brownish yellow, rectangular or polygonal, some containing granules. Starch granules simple, subrounded or oblong, 3 - 28 µm in diameter, hilum cleft like, pointed stellate and V shaped, striations indistinct, compound granules rare of 2 - 3 components.Root of Phytolacca americana: Raphides of calcium oxalate relatively long up to 98 µm, prisms and clusters absent

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matterProcessed with vinegar: Stir fry the clean Radix Phytolocae as described under the method for stir frying with vinegar (Appendix ll D) to dryness using 30 kg of vinegar per 100 kg of Radix Phytolocae.

Action  : To cause drastic purgation and also diuresis, to counteract toxicity, and to reduce nodulation.

Indication  : anasarca with oliguria; and constipation external: carbuncles and sores

Precautions  : Contraindicated in pregnancy.

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g; for external use, appropriate quantity of the fresh root to be pounded into paste or the dried root to be ground into powder, and applied topically.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from mould and moth.
