Collection  : The plant is uprooted in autumn when the fruit is ripe but not dehiscent and dried in the sun. The seed is collected, removed from foreign matter and dried in the sun again.

Description  : Seed of Phaseolus calcaratus: Oblong and slightly flattened, 5 - 8mm long, 3 - 5mm in diameter. Externally purplish red, less lustrous or somewhat lustrous, hilum linear raised at one side and inclined to one end, white, about 2/3 in length of the seed, dented and forming and longitudinal furrow in the middle and with indistinct ridge at the other side. Texture hard, uneasily broken, 2 cotyledons, milky white. Odorless and taste slightly sweet.Seed of Paseolus angularis: Short cylindrical both ends slightly truncate or obtusely rounded, 4 - 6mm in diameter. Externally dark brownish red, lustrous hilum not raised.

Identification  : Seed of Phaseolus calcaratus: Transverse section, epidermal cells of testa consisting of 1 row of palisade cells, 2 rows in hilum containing reddish brown substance, light band distinct. Pillar cell 1 row, dumb-bell shape, underneath ranged 10- rows of parenchymatous cells with the inner cells dilapidated. Cotyledon cells containing numerous starch granules and fine prisms and clusters of calcium oxalate a caruncle occurring outside the palisade cells in hilum, a tracheid island occurring inside, elliptical cell walls, reticulate thickened with actinenchyma in both sides, cells stellar with large intercellular space. Seed of Phaseolus angularis: Fine calcium oxalate prisms occasionally visible in cotyledon cells containing no clusters.

Processing  :

Action  : To cause diuresis, to counteract toxicity, and to promote the drainage of pus.

Indication  : edema; jaundice with dark urine; acute rheumatic arthritis; carbuncles; boils, appendicitis

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 9 to 30 g; for external use, appropriate quntity to be ground into powder and applied topically after mixing with liquid.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place, protected from moth.
