Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Perilla Leaf

Specific Name  : Folium perillae

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in summer when foliage branch growing luxuriantly, removed from foreign matter and dried in the sun.

Description  : Mostly crumpled, rolled and broken, when whole, ovate, 4 0 11cm long, 2.5 - 9cm wide, apex long acuminate or acute, base rounded or broadly cuneate, margin crenate. Both surface purple or upper surface green and the lower purple with scattered greyish white hairs and numerous point shaped glandular scales, petioles 2 - 7mm in diameter, purplish green with a pith in the center of fructure, odor delicately aromatic, taste slightly pungent.

Identification  : 1.Leaf in the surface view: Some epidermal cells containing purplish pigment, a red color is produced immediately on adding 10% hydrochloric acid nsolution, or a green color is produced on adding 5% potassium hydroxide solution, subsequently cahnged to yellowish green.2.To 0.7g of the powder in a round bottom flask add 250ml of water, mix well and connect the flask with volatile oil determination apparatus. Add water from the top of the apparatus until it reaches the mark and overflows to the flask. Add to the flask 1.5ml of petroleum ether (60 - 90ºC) and connect the flask to boil and continue heating to gentle boiling for 2 hours, cool, separate the petroleum ether layer and used it as the test solution. Prepare the solution of 0.7g Folium Perillae reference drug in the same manner as the reference drug solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B), using silica gel G as the coating substance and petroleum ether (60 - 90ºC)-ethyl acetate (19:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately 10µl each of the two solutions to the plate. After developing (with 15cm developing distance) and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with dinitrophenylhrdrazine TS and wait. The spots in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spots in the chromatogram obtained with the reference dreug solution.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter and old branches, spray with water, cut into pieces and dry.

Action  : To induce perspiration and dispel cold, and to regulate the stomach function.

Indication  : common cold with cough and nausea; vomiting of pregnancy; fish or crab poisoning

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 4.5 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
