Collection  : The drug is collected in autumn, removed from fibrous root, wash clean and dried in the sun.

Description  : Nodular, flattened cylindrical, somewhat curved, 5 - 12 cm long, 1.0 - 4.5 cm in diameter. Externally yellowish brown or greyish brown and white where the outer bark fallen off, having densely lamellar, prominent and annular striations. On one side with distinct node, elliptic sunken scars of stems and on the other side with sparsely rare fibrous root or its warty scars of stem and on the outer side with sparsely rare fibrous roots or its warty scars. Scale leaves and remains of stem occurring at the apex. Texture hard, fracture smooth, white to pale brown, starchy or gummy. Odourless, taste slightly bitter and numb.

Identification  : 1.Powder: White starch granules numerous, sub-rounded, elliptic or reniform, 3 - 18 µm in diameter. Needle crystals of calcium oxalate bundled or scattered, 80 - 250 µm long. Scalariform and reticulate vessels 10 - 24 µm in diameter.2.Macerate 0.5g of the fine powder with 3 ml of water for 10 minutes, shake vigorously, persistent foam is produced.3.Heat under reflux 2g of the coarse powder in 20 ml of ether on a water bath for 10 minutes and filter. Divide the filtrate into two parts and evaporate to dryness. Dissolve one part of the residue in 1 ml of acetic anhydride. Add 2 drops of sulfuric acid, a yellow color is produced, gradually turns to red, purple, blue or dirty green colour. To another part add 1 ml of glacial acetic acid, 5 drops of acetyl chloride and a small amount of zinc chloride, warm slightly, a pale red or purple color is produced.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into thin slices and dry in the sun.

Action  : To remove heat, counteract toxicity, cuse the subsidence of swelling and alleviate pain, and to relieve convulsions.

Indication  : boils, carbuncles, sore throat, venomous snake bite, traumatic pain; convulsions

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g; for external use, appropriate quantity to be ground into powder and applied after mixed with liquid.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place, protected from moth.
