Collection : The fruit is collected in autumn and winter, expose to strong sun light until the fruit dehiscent, the seed is gathered and dried in the sun.
Description : Butterfly shape thin slices, testa extended to wide and thin wing at three sides except the base, 5 - 8 cm long, 3.5 - 4.5cm wide. Externally pale yellowish white, the wing translucent, silky lustrous with radial striations, most of the edge broken. Texture light when remove from testa showing cotyledons surrounded by a membranous endosperm. 2 cotyledons butterfly shape, yellowish green or yellow, 1 - 1.5cm long in diameter. Odorless and taste slightly bitter.
Identification : 1.Powder: yellow or yellowish green, cells of seed, wing long fiber shape with sinously thickened walls, 20 - 40 µm in diameter. Cells of endosperm polygonal with beaded walls.2.To 2 g of the powder add 30 ml of ethanol, heat under reflux for 15 minutes and filter. Dissolve 0.5g of boric acid in the filtrate, filter, use filtrate as the test solution. Dissolve baicalin CRS in the ethanol to produced a solution containing 1 mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (*Appendix Vl B), using silica gel G as the coating substance and n-butanol acetic acid water (6:1:5:2.5) as the mobile phase. Apply separately 10 µl of each of the above two solutions to the plate. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air. The spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.

Action : To remove heat from the lung and relieve sore throat, and to regulate the flow of qi of the liver and the stomach.
Indication : cough, sore throat and hoarseness due to heat in the lung; epigastric pain due to stagnation of qi of the liver and stomach
Precautions :
Dosage : 1.5 to 3 g.
Storage : Preserve in a ventilated and dry place.
