Background
Chinese Name (pinyin): Maidong
Chinese Name :
Common Name :Dwarf Lilyturf Tuber
Specific Name : Radix ophiopogonis
Scientific Name:
Collection : The drug is collected in summer, washed clean, sun-dried and piled up repeatedly until nearly dry. Removed from rootlet and dried.
Description : Fusiform with two ends slightly tapering, 1.5 - 3 cm long, 3 - 6 mm in diameter, externally yellowish white, finely wrinkled longitudinally. Texture tough, fracture yellowish white, translucent, stele small, odour slightly aromatic, taste sweetish and bitterish.
Identification : Transverse section: Epidermis consisting of 1 layer of cells. Velamen of 3 - 5 layers of lignified cells. Cortex broad, scattered with mucilage cells containing raphides oc calcium oxalate, some needles up to 10 µm in diameter. Endodermis cells with evenly thickened and lignified walls and with passage cells, a layer of stone cells lying at the outside of endodermis, the inner and lateral walls thickened, finely and dosely pitted, Stele relatively small. Phloem bundles 16 - 22, each located between the xylem arms respectively. Vessels tracheids, fibres and lignified parenchymatous cells in the inner side of the xylem bundles linking up to a ring. Pith small, parenchymatous cells subrounded.1.Examine a thin slice of the drug under ultra violet light (365 nm), a pale blue fluorescence is produced.Water: Carry out the method for determination of water (Appendix lX H, method 1) not more than 18.0%Extractives: Carry out the cold extraction for water soluble extractive (Appendix X A) not less than 60.0%.
Processing : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, press to be flattened and dry.
Action : To mourish yin and promote the production of body fluid, to moisten the lung, and to ease the mind.
