Background

Chinese Name (pinyin): Dingxiang Luoleyou

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Ocimum oil

Specific Name  : Oleum ocimi gratissmi

Scientific Name:
Collection  :

Description  : A pale yellow clear liquid, gradually becoming brown and viscid on exposure to the air or long storage, odor aromatic resembling clove, taste pungent with a sensation of numbness and fullness. Freely soluble in ethanol, ether or glacial acetic acid. Practically insoluble in water.Relative density: 1.030 - 1.050 (Appendix Vll A)Refractive index: 1.530 - 1.540 (Appendix Vll F)

Identification  : Dissolve 0.5 ml in 1ml in ethanol, add 5- 10drops of freshly prepared 5% solution of vanillin in hydrochloric acid freshly prepared, shake well and a dark green color is produced.Water soluble phenols: To 1ml of the oil add 20 ml of hot water, shake well, cool and filter through moistened filter paper. Add 1 drop of ferric chloride TS to the filtrate. A blue or purple color should not be produced except a transient greyish green colour.Heavy metals: Carry out the limit test for heavy metals (Appendix lX E, method 2) using 1g not more than 10 ppm.Assay: To 10 ml of the oil (A), measured accurately in a 100 ml cassia flask, add 75ml of potassium hydroxide (1mol/L) VS, shake for 5 minutes, heat on a water bath for 10 minutes and allow to cool until separation takes place. Add a quantity of potassium hydroxide (1mol/L) VS until the oil layer raises to the graduated part of the neck of the flask. Allow to stand for about 18 hours until the layer becomes clear. Examine the ml of the separating oil layer (B). (A-B) x 10 is the percentage content of (C10H12O2) in the oil. It contains 85.0% (ml/ml) of eugenol (C10H12O2)

Processing  :

Action  : Local analgesic, antiseptic disinfectant.

Indication  : Toothache due to caries

Precautions  :

Dosage  : Preserve in well filled and tightly closed containers, protected from light and sotred in a cool place.
