Description  : Triangular-ovoid, 2.5-3mm long, about 1.5mm wide. Externally black and rough, apex somewhat narrow and sharp; base relatively obtuse, with irregular protrudings. Texture hard; fracture greyish-white, oily. Odour, slightly aromatic; taste, pungent.

Identification  : ransverse section: Epidermis cells of testa 1 row, varying in size, sub-rectangular or irregular oblong, frequently elongated tangentially, outer walls mostly with papilla-like or non-glandular hair like excrescences, thin finely and densely granulate striations indistinctly visible. Parenchyma of testa consisting of 3 - 4 rows of cells, rectangular or irregular, somewhat elongated tangentially, inner epidermis cells 1 row, flattened, brown. Parisperm consisting of 1 row of rectangular cells, elongated radial, sometimes dilapidated, endosperm cells polygonal, filled with oil droplets and aleurone grains. Cotyledon cells polygonal or sub-rounded, the outer row of cells slightly elongated radially, filled with aleurone grains and fatty oil droplets.Powder: Greyish black, epidermal cells of testa dark brown, polygonal on surface view, varying in size, the outer walls gibbose or mammillate, the inner epidermis of testa, brown, rectangular or sub-polygonal on surface view, anticlinal walls beaded, periclinal walls finely and densely reticulate striated. Endosperm cells polygonal containing oil droplets and aleurone grains.

Processing  :

Action  : To replenish the kidney and benefit the brain, to stimulate menstruation, to promote the flow of milk, and to induce diuresis.

Indication  : tinnitus and forgetfulness; amenorrhea; inadequate secretion of milk; urinary tract infecion, urolithiasis

Precautions  : Contraindicated in pregnancy and in patients with febrile diseases.

Dosage  : 2 to 6 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
