Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in spring and autumn, removed from soil and foreign matter and dried in the sun or in the shade.

Description  : Subconical, mostly tortous, 5 - 18 cm long. Rhizomes short and small, top with the remains of stem and leaves, long and narrow membranaceous-flaky or fibrous. Outer layer blackish brown, inner layer brown or yellow. Root simple or multiple joined branched or juxtaposed. 0.3 - 1 cm in diameter. Externally brown, shrunken with rootlets. Texture lax and fragile, easily broken, fracture rough, bark dark brown, usually splintery, wood yellowish white. Odour characteristic, taste bitter and pungent with a cooling sensation.

Identification  : Powder: Dark brown, stone cells subrounded or irregularly polygonal, occasionally long slat shaped, single or grouped, 33 - 64 µm in diameter, 200 µm or more long, walls fairly thickened, colourless, lumen narrow. Scalariform or reticulated vessels 7 - 40 µ in diameter, small scalariform vessels in bundle, sometimes accompanied by slender wood fibres. Cork cells mostly irregularly polygonal, walls dark brown, relatively thin, lumen containing yellow to brownish yellow volatile oil. Fragments of residual basal leaves numerous, cells rectangular or elongated polygonal, yellowish to brown. 20 - 31 µm in diameter, 50 - 90µm long, walls beaded and thickened. The cells of another fragments long slat shaped up to 200 µm long. Sometimes walls beaded and thickened.Assay: Carry out the method for determination of volatile oil (Appendix X D). It contains not less than 2.0% (ml/g) 0f volatile oil.

Processing  :

Action  : To regulate the flow of qi and relieve pain, and to invigorate the spleen function.

Indication  : epogastric and abdominal distension with anrexia and vomiting; external use for toothache and swelling of the foot

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 6 g; for external use, approprtiate quantity to be made into in fusion for gargle, made into decoction for washing, or ground into powder for topical application.

Storage  : Preserve in a cool and dry place, ptoected from moisture and moth.
