Collection  : The drug is collected all year round, romoved from old branch and dried in the shade.

Description  : Leaf and cacumen of Murraya exotica: Young branches cylindrical, 1-5mm in diameter, surface greyish brown, longitudinal wrinkled. Texture hard, uneasily broken, fructure uneven, leaves pinnatly compound, leaflets 3 - 9 mostly fallen off, obovate or nearly rhombic, the widest part above the middle, 3cm long, 1.5cm wide, apex obtuse, acute or sunkened, base nearly oblique, margins entire, yellowish green, texture leathery. The upper surface bearing transparent gland cells, leaflets short petioled or nearly sessile, the lower part sometimes pubescent, odor aromatic, taste bitter, pungent and numb.Leaf and cacumen of Merraya paniculata: leaflets ovate or elliptical, the widest part under the middle, 2 - 8cm long, 1 - 3cm wide, acuminate or short acute.

Identification  : 1.Transverse section: Upper and lower epidermis 1 row of cells respectively, rectangular, bearing unicellular non-glandular hairs, 30 - 70 - (100) µm long, 9 - 15µm in diameter, mesophyll tissue bifacial, palisade tissue of 2 - 3 rows of cells not passing through the midrib. Vascular bundle of midrib bicollateral, lignified fibres occurring above and under the vascular bunale, mesophyll tissue containing numerous clusters of calcium oxalate, 9 - 25µm in diameter, sometimes prisms visible, oil cavities numerous, rounded, 80 - 120µm in diameter containing yellow oil droplets.2.To 2g of coarse powder add 20ml of 20ml of ethanol, heat under reflux on a water bath for 30 minutes and filter. Evaporate 5ml of the filtrate to dryness and dissolve the residue in 2ml of ethyl acetate. Transfer to a test tube, add 2 - 3 drops of each of freshly prepared 7% solutionof hydroxylamine hydrochloride in methanol and a 10% solution of potassium hydroxide in methanol, mix well, heat gently, cool, adjust the pH value to 3 - 4 with diluted hydrochloric acid. Add 1% solution of ferric chloride in ethanol, a purple red color is produced.
