Collection : The drug is collected in autumn when the fruit turns from pale green to deep green, dried in the air for several days and dried at a low temperature.
Description : Ovoid, elliptical or spherical, 4.5 - 8.5cm long, 3.5 - 6cm in diameter. Externally brown, yellowish brown or greenish brown, marked with darked colored patches and covered with yellow fine hairs, some exhibitng 6 - 11 longitudinal lines. Apex with a style scar and base with a fruit stalk scar. Texture light, fragile, pericartp thin, easily broken, sarcocarp songyform, pale brown, seeds oblate, abundant about 1.5cm long and 1.2 cm wide, pale red to rownish red, slightly dented between two surfaces, surrounded by radial furrows and channeled at the edge. Odour slight, taste sweet.
Identification : 1.Powder: brown, stone cells of sarcocarp mostly grouped, yellow, square or ovoid, 7 - 38µm in diameter, walls thick, pit canals obvious. Stone cells of testa subrectangular or irregular, thin walled and with pits. Fibres long fusiform,16 - 42 µm in diameter, lumina relatively big and pit canals obvious. Vessels scalariform and spiral parenchyatous cells irregular and pitted.2.To 2g of the powder add 50ml of ethanol, heat under reflux for 30 minutes, filter, evaporate the filtrate to about 5ml, extract with two portions of n-butanol (10ml, 5ml), evaporate the combined n-butanol to dryness, dissolve the residue in 0.5ml of methanol as the test solution. Prepare a solution of Fructus Mormordicae reference drug in the same manner as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatograpghy (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G containing sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose as the coating substance and chloroform-methanol-water (60:10:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately 10 µl of each of the above two solutions to the plate. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air. Spray with 10% sulfuric acid in ethanol solution, dry with hot blowing until the colour of the spot clear. The spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in the position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference drug solution.

Indication : dry cough, sore throat and hoarseness due to heat in the lung; constipation

Dosage : 9 to 15 g.
Storage : Preserve in a dry place, protected from mould and moth.
