Collection : The drug is collected in summer and autumn when foliage branch growing luxuriantly or in the third round of flowering, gathered in several times on fine days and dried in the sun or in the shade.
Description : Stems square with opposite branches, 15 - 40cm long, 2 - 4mm in diameter, externally purplish brown or pale green, the angular region pubescent, internodes 2 - 5cm long, texture fragile, fracture white, pith hollowed. Leaves opposite, short petioled, lamina crumpled and rolled when whole, broadly lanceolate, oblong or ovate, 2 - 7cm long, 1 - 3cm wide. The upper surface dark green and the lower surface greyish green, sparaely pubescent, bearing concave point shaped glandular scales. Venticillaster axillary, calyx campanulate with five terminal teeth, corolla pale purple. Odour characteristic and aromatic after rubbing, taste pungent and cool.
Identification : 1.Leaf in the surface view: Glandular scales, with a head consisting of 8 cells up to 90µm in diameter and a unicellular stalk, small glandular hairs, with a unicellular head and a unicellular stalk. Non-glandular hairs 1 - 8 celled, often curved, thick walled and slightly warty. Stomata diacytic numerous on the lower surface.2.The oily matter obtained from the microsublimation of the leaf powder add 2 drops of sulfuric acid and a small quantity of vanillin crystal, a yellow or orange yellow color is produced, turning to purplish red on adding 1 drop of water.3.To 0.5g of powder add 5ml of petroleum ether (boiling range 60 - 90ºC) stoppered well, shake for several minutes, allow to stand for 30 minutes, filter and use the filtrate as the test solution. To methol CRS add petroleum ether to produce a solution containing 2mg per ml as the reference solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix Vl B) using silica gel G as the coating substance and benzene ethyl acetate (19:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 10 - 20µl of the test solution and 10µl of the reference solution. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with mixture of 2% w/v solution of vanillin of sulfuric acid-ethanol (2:8). Heat the plate at 100ºC for about 10 minutes. The spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution corresponds in position and colour to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution.Leaves: not less than 30%.Assay: Carry out the method for determination of volatile oil (Appendix X D). To a sufficient quantity of 5mm long short sections, add 600ml of water per 100g, boil gently for 3 hours and determine the content of the volatile oil. It contains not less than 0.8% (ml/g) of volatile oilProcessing: Remove the old stems and foreign matter, spray with a small quantity of water, soft slightly, cut into short sections, 5 - 8mm long, dark green, purplish brown or greyish brown. Carry out the method for the determination of volatile oil describe under assay. It contains not less than 0.4% (ml/g)
Processing :
Action : To dispel wind-heat from the head and eyes, and to preomote eruption.
Indication : headache in influenza, upper respiratory tract infection and other epidemic febrile diseases at the initial stage; inflammation of the eye, sore throat, ulcers in the mouth; rubella, measles; discomfort with feeling of distension in the chest and hypochondriac regions
Precautions :
Dosage : 3 to 6 g, to be added when the ddecoction is nearly done.
Storage : Preserve in a cool and dry place.
