Scientific Name:
Collection  : The drug is collected in spring and autumn, remove from rootlet and soil and dried.

Description  : Slenderly cylindriccal, tortous and branched up to 50 cm long, 3 - 8 cm in diameter. Externally yellowish brown to dark brown, mostly bearing numerous curved rootlets and exhibiting prominent rootlet scars and longitudinal wrinkles, the outer layers easily exfoliated. Texture tanacious, easily broken, fracture uneven and fibrous, wood yellowish, arranged radially and medullated. Odour slight; taste bitter.

Identification  : To about 5 g of the powder add 5 ml ammonia TS, stir well, allow to stand for 20 minutes. Add 50 ml of chloroform, shake, allow to stand for 1 hour and filter. Extract the filtrate with 5 ml of dilute hydrochloric acid solution in a separating funnel. Transfer the acid solution to two test tubes. Add 1 - 2 drops of potassium iodobismuthate TS to one tube, an orange red precipitate is produced. Add 1 - 2 drops of iodine TS to another tube a brown precipitate is produced.

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean, soften thoroughly, cut into thick slices and dry.

Action  : To remove toxic heat and relieve rheumatic pains.

Indication  : sore throat, colitis, dysentery, rheumatic arthalgia

Precautions  :

Dosage  : 3 to 9 g.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
