Background

Paojiapian ÅÚ¼×Ƭ Shanjiazhu ɽ¼×Öé Zhishanjia ÖËɽ¼× Chinese Name (pinyin): Chuanshanjia

Chinese Name  :

Common Name  :Pangolin Scales

Specific Name  : Squama manitis

Scientific Name:
Collection  : The pangolin is captured all year round, killed and treated with boiling water for a moment. The scales is taken down, wash clean and dried in the sun.

Description  : In fan shape, triangular, rhombic or shield shape flattened plates sometimes half folded, central part relatively thick, marginal part thin, varying in size, 0.7 - 55cm in length and with. The outer surface blackish brown or yellowish brown, lustrous broad end with dozens of regularly arranged longitudinal lines and several transverse lines, narrow end smooth. Inner surface relatively light colored with 1 obviously raised arciform transverse crest line at the central part and several fine parallel lines underneath. Horny, translucent, texture tenacious and elastic, uneasily broken, odor slightly stinking and taste weak.

Identification  : To 1 g of the powder add 60 ml of chloroform, heat under reflux on a water bath for 4 hours, cool, filter and evaporate the filtrate to dryness, dissolve the residue in 1 ml of chloroform and use as the test solution. Prepare a solution of Squama Manitis reference drug in the same manner as the reference drug solution. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix V1 B), using silica gel G as the coating substance and benzene-acetone (20:1) as the mobile phase. Apply separately 10 µl of each of the above two solutions to the plate. After developing and removal of the plate, dry it in the air, spray with solution of acetic anhydride-sulfuric acid (9:1) heat at 80ºC for several minutes. Examine under daylight. The spots in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spots in the chromatogram obtained with the reference solution. Examine under ultra violet light (365 nm). The fluorescent spot in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and color to the spot in the chromatogram obtained with the reference drug solution.Foreign matter: Not more than 4% (Appendix 1X A)

Processing  : Eliminate foreign matter, wash clean and dry.Scalded with sand: Grade Squama Manitis according to size, scald with sand as describe under the method for processing with scalding (Appendix 11 D) to swell, wash clean and dry. Break to pieces before use.Process with vinegar: Grade according to size, scald in the same manner, quench with vinegar using 30 kg of vinegar with 100 kg of Squama manitis, take out and dry. Break to pieces before use.

Action  : To stimulate menstrual flow nd the lfow of milk, to cause the subsidence of swelling and promote the discharge of pus, and to eliminate wind from the collaterals.

Indication  : amenorrhea with mass formation in the abdomen; galactostasis; carbuncles and sores; arthralgia with numbness and muscular contractions

Precautions  : Used with caution in pregnancy.

Dosage  : 5 to 9 g, used after being processed.

Storage  : Preserve in a dry place.
